April's Finest Awards Berths to the WTOC

Five Teams Earn Berths to the ISSA/ISF World Tournament of Champions

North Charleston, South Carolina - The April's Finest Senior Classic was played on April 15-17 and the Divisional winners each earned a berth in the ISSA/ISF World Tournament of Champions to be played Tampa and Plant City, Florida over the last weekend in January 2012.  The following senior teams earned their berth:

     55 Division - Triangle Masters, Chapel Hill, NC (Manager Mike Koch)

     60 Division - CH Engineering, Zebulon, NC (Manager Dan Piner)

     65 Division - Flip Dow Bonding, Gastonia, NC (Manager Flip Dow)

     70 Division - Hamels 70s (Major), Glen Burnie, MD (Manager Guy Cremen)

     70 Division - Carolina Cardinals (AAA), Apex, NC (Manager Walt Gustafson)

All teams playing in the ISSA/ISF World Tournament of Champions will be placed in their age/skill level division per their ISSA Rating as of November 1, 2011, the deadline for qualified teams to enter.  Congratulations to all the winners at the April's Finest (results and photos are on the ISSA Website.)

The next qualifier for the World Tournament of Champions will be May 13-15, 2011 at Drifton, PA.  This is a new ISSA event to be held at the Jake Kislan Complex and is sure to become a favorite for the senior players in the Northeast, many of whom probably played there in years past.  Entry will close on or about May 1.

Drifton Welcomes the ISSA to the Northeast in May

 

DRIFTON, PENNSYLVANIA - The ISSA is looking forward to holding the ISSA/NASF Penn Senior Classic at Drifton, PA on May 13-15. The Jake Kislan Complex will provide the Masters and Senior teams a great softball experience at an exciting new venue. After years of requests from players and managers, the ISSA is pleased to have the opportunity to hold one of our senior tournaments in the northeast. Teams who have not previously participated in an ISSA tournament can review the ISSA rules and tournament info on the ISSA Website. A couple points to stress for potential new teams are 1) senior bats including the Miken Ultra II are allowed, 2) no player registration fee, a government issue picture ID such as a drivers license is permitted and 3) the ISSA rates the senior teams.

The ISSA/NASF Penn Senior Classic will offer berths to the ISSA/ISF World Tournament of Champions to all the divisional winners at the event.

NOTE:  Entry deadline for the tournament has been extended.  Any senior team wishing to enter should contact the ISSA Office by this weekend to discuss space availability.  Call RB at 571-436-9704 or Greg at 571-220-0158 to enter your team.

Pennington Tournament Honors Fallen Police Officer

MANASSAS, VIRGINIA - The 21st Annual Officer Pennington Memorial Softball Tournament will include senior divisions again this year. The seniors will play a one-day (Saturday, April 30) tournament with a modified double elimination format that provides for each team to play a minimum of three games. The event was established 21 years ago to honor Mike Pennington who played softball in the Manassas Men’s League and was killed in the line of duty serving with the Prince William County Police Department. The event is a favorite with the local softball players , many of whom played with Officer Pennington and participate to keep his memory alive. The tournament includes divisions for Men’s, Coed and Senior teams. Entries close on April 27.   Seniors Experience Southern Hospitality at the April's Finest

NORTH CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA - The April’s Finest Senior Classic is set to get underway on Friday, April 15. The preliminary game schedule will be posted on the ISSA Website. This popular senior tournament is one of the sport’s oldest on-going senior events. North Charleston provides an excellent base for the visitors who enjoy taking in the charm and southern hospitality available through out the Low Country. Festivities will get underway at the player appreciation dinner on Thursday night. Cindy Dambaugh and Joe Lysauht have planned a special senior tournament experience for 2011.

ISSA at the NASC Symposium

GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA - ISSA Staff members will be attending the National Association of Sports Commissions annual symposium at Greensboro, NC on April 12-14. The NASC connects people and ideas in the sports event industry. Founded in 1992, the NASC represents nearly 500 organizations, including 300 cities within the sports event industry across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

The ISSA will be meeting with organizations that attract sporting events to their community (i.e. sports commissions and convention and visitors bureaus), event owners, and vendors and suppliers to the sports event industry. The NASC is the primary network for communication and information sharing on all topics relating to the sports industry. We look forward to discussing future senior softball tournament opportunities with interested communities from throughout the United States.

Lester Leonard Invitational, Senior Division

MANASSAS, VIRGINIA - Play Ball. The Senior Softball Capital of the World played host to some of the top rated senior slowpitch softball teams in the United States on Saturday, April 2. Playing in the Senior Division of the Lester Leonard Invitational, senior teams from three Mid-Atlantic states entered the 2011 competition to vie for the divisional championships.

The Division 1 final pitted the IMS Dogs from nearby Aldie, VA against the High Street Bucs from Baltimore, MD. The IMS Dogs are coached by Tom Wells and are the 2010 ISSA World Champions in the 50 Major division. The Dogs cruised to a 31-15 victory to remain undefeated on the day. Earlier, the Bucs advanced to the finals by defeating the Metro Stars 40-35 in a see-saw battle between the two explosive power hitting teams. Finishing in fourth place was St. Anthony’s from Delaware. The tournament MVPs were Danny Gregory (IMS Dogs) and Mark Dickinson. (High Street Bucs).

The Division 2 championship was captured by Spare Parts, a Manassas senior league team coached by Bill Cameron and Bobby Coleman. (Most of the players are on the Northern Virginia Force 60+ Major roster as well.) Spare Parts defeated Hammers from Richmond, VA 28-18 to claim the division title. Finishing in third place was BH Maintenance from Fairfax, VA. The Division 2 MVPs were Frank Tomlinson from Spare Parts and Tom Latta from Hammers.

 MANASSAS, VIRGINIA - The Senior Softball Capital of the World played host to some of the top rated senior slowpitch softball teams in the United States on Saturday, April 2. Playing in the Senior Division of the Lester Leonard Invitational, senior teams from three Mid-Atlantic states  entered the 2011 competition to vie for the divisional championships.
